5 ways with washi tape & tarot study
For anyone who loves a bit of fun with stationery and because we all need to play
Today is just for fun but helpful if you enjoy connecting with the tarot in playful ways and you're trying to study your deck.
I discovered washi tape only this year and I have since found some simple ways of using it to bring some stationery love to my daily cards.
When you're a mum to teenagers you need to relax and play to stay sane. So here I am mucking about for the sheer hell of it. Washi tape is (one of) my guilty pleasures.
By the way in case you have no idea what I'm on about, washi tape is a teeny tiny roll of masking tape often decorated with pretty designs.
When I use washi tape in my journal or on my tarot cards, my inner child comes to life, the little girl who used to colour in the squares in her jotter or make outfits for paper dolls feels alive again.
5 easy and fun ways with washi tape for tarot study
The wonderful thing about washi tape is that you can stick it directly onto your tarot cards or your tarot guide book and write on it without damaging the card and of course when you're done you can peel it off and the card doesn't rip. Genius.
I recommend plain washi tape for this. In this way you can write on it more easily.
Here's an attempt at a video. I hope it works. Instructions below the video.
Here are a few fun ideas:
To deepen your bond with your cards you may enjoy thinking of your own name for each tarot card in the deck. I like to think of the Empress as ‘Nurturing’. So you can write ‘Nurturing’ on your washi tape and stick it to the bottom of your card. Great if you're learning.
Most people have keywords they associate with their cards. When you're learning tarot, keywords can be really useful for sparking meaning when you turn a card over. You probably don't want to write keywords directly on your card (but nothing bad will happen if you do) but you can write your personal keywords on washi tape and stick them on the card back for quick reference and as a study aid.
My third idea comes from a feeling of irreverence I had recently when I was highlighting a book about Buddhism. It occurred to me I could instead stick washi tape in the margins as markers instead of highlighting text. So, you can do the same with your tarot guide or little white book as it's commonly called. You can even annotate your washi tape without ruining the page if that kind of thing bugs you like it does me.
A simple one. Use the washi tape to stick your tarot reading for the day to the wall. That way it'll be in sight and in mind as you work at your desk.
Use the washi tape to create borders in your tarot journal when you're writing out a spread.
So for example if you do a 3 card spread, create 3 card shapes with the washi tape and write the card position beneath. I mean you can draw it but somehow, creating shapes with pretty sticky paper is surprisingly therapeutic. Give it a try.
Any washi tape lovers out there? How do you use yours?
Please do consider sharing this on Notes.I bet you know someone who adores a roll of pretty tape.

I confess I don’t consider that I’ve read a (non-fiction) book properly until it’s covered in pencil marks, highlighter, dog-ears, strips of paper with more scribbles on, biro annotations because I couldn’t find a book pencil in and (of course) the occasional coffee stain. It’s always easy tell the books I’ve appreciated the most. But pretty rolls of tape? That’s a step too far for this aging goth…
I absolutely love these creative ideas, Claire! Wow. Thanks for the inspiration! Washi tape is amazing, but I actually haven’t used it in a while. Think I’ll have to pull it out a get a bit more crafty again! 😘
