Tarot for autumn

Happy autumn equinox (I know a little late)

Did I tell you already that I'm deep into the first year of my astrology course?

It's fascinating and very challenging.

There's a crucial concept I’m learning about that I hadn't thought about that deeply.

It turns out that the way the light changes from season to season is one of the most foundational astrological symbols that weaves its way through the zodiacal year.

Of course a notable change in that light happens at the autumn equinox, which brings us to this moment.

This is Libra season, tempting us downwards into the part of the year where, each day, there is more darkness than light in a 24 hour period.

As this shift in light was a symbolic message for ancient astrologers I decided this week to ask the cards to help me dive further into the meaning.

What does this change in light mean for us archetypally? What wisdom does this season hold?

Here's what the magician “told” me

The change in light is a catalyst

Traditionally, the magician is the kickstarter, the initiator, the activator, the catalyst

In the same way that the magician kickstarts change, so the darkness overtaking the light stimulates an instinct that transforms how we spend our time.

Even on a very mundane level you see this force at work in people.

We begin to make warming soups or swap to winter boots even if the actual weather is still clement.

So the light change is the magician.

Darkness overtaking is a reminder to move inwards where we find the magicians source

The change in light to more darkness sparks off a desire to turn inward and this too has magician energy.

Think about when you close your eyes and sit in darkness, in some moments you may get an inkling that there is an infinite, eternal, timeless energy that exists. Even if it's fleeting you may have sensed it within. Have you?

Hold this thought and now look closely at the card and you'll see the infinity symbol that looks like a sideways 8.

At autumn equinox and through Libra season, it’s as if the eyes of the universe are slowly closing & the need to turn inward helps us to turn more towards this infinite energy. A oneness in the symbolic dark.

You may have wondered how the magician has so much power.

It's not at all the power harnessed from pushing or willpower.

It's something much deeper that comes from turning within to a world of less distraction and acting consistently in accordance with that.

People say that the magician channels energy. Does this start in darkness?

The change in light is a gathering of darkness which initiates a gathering of resources.

Look closely again at this magician and you will notice four symbols in front of her/him. The four elements of earth, water, air and fire.

This is a time of year for gathering in the elements. It's a harvest energy to take us through the darkness to come.

Again we see it around us. People picking blackberries to bake in a crumble. Hawthorn berries made into syrups to stave off colds. Wood stores being filled for inviting hearthfires.

The magician gathers resources and without the harvest there is no nourishment. Without nourishment the magician’s power will run dry.

This is the wisdom of the beginning of autumn with the magician. May you benefit from it
