Happy moon day

The sixes in tarot with journal prompts.

For those of you who like to listen whilst you pair your socks or cook your dinner there's a recording of me reading today's post at the end.

I’ve been thinking about the number six lately, because that is the kind of witchy thing I do. When I see six, in my mind’s eye, I see a dice. Two lines of three dots. It’s a pleasing image. Aligned, balanced, harmonious.

Numbers hold meaning like any other symbol. We could even say that numbers speak and we have to learn to listen to them.

If you think about it, our symbolic connection with numbers is woven into our language.

We talk about how two is company but three is a crowd. When we are happy we are on cloud nine. When we're ecstatic we're in our seventh heaven. Magpies gather in numbers and we have to greet them to either avoid bad luck or bring good fortune.

Because of this, when I draw a card from my deck each day, not only do I look at the image, the colour or the story I'm being told, I also see the number on the card as a message.

As I was thinking about the number six, I remembered how as a child I'd play with a box of buttons at my aunt’s house. I’d line the buttons up in patterns.

I feel sure now, that if you handed me a box of buttons and asked me to take six of them from the tin, I’d place all six on the carpet in two lines, all neat and tidy.

In this way, I have come to think of the number six, not only as a number of balance and harmony as is traditional, but as a number of alignment. Six buttons nicely lined up.

Today, in order to show you the sixes in the minor arcana, I've chosen to work with the most beautifully illustrated deck. The Oak, Ash and Thorn.

I hope you'll see yourself and your life in each short description of the card and that each accompanying journal prompt gives you a moment to get yourself a tea and remember who you are again if only for a few moments.

The six of pentacles

The six of pentacles speaks to the theme of giving and receiving in a material sense.

In the Oak Ash and Thorn, you see a hare beneath a tree. She looks thoughtful. She wonders how much she is willing to give of herself. Meanwhile beautiful birds fly around her. There are fruits on the floor and the old tree behind her provides a place to sit still and rest. Has she noticed? Does she allow herself to receive as well as give?

Journal prompt

Is there a part of your life where giving depletes you? What would bring you back into alignment with a more balanced sense of giving and receiving?

The six of cups

The six of cups speaks to the theme realigning with the sweetness of life.

In the Oak Ash and Thorn deck the squirrels scamper around a tree trunk. Each acorn cup overflows with forget me not flowers. There's enough sweetness for every creature in the woods. When was the last time you allowed yourself to be as playful as a squirrel?

Journal prompt

Where have you been acting all grown up and serious and how would playfulness realign you with the sweet things in life again?
